I Will Follow
Published in Paperback by Xulon Press (June, 2002)
Authors: Bethany Patchin and Clare Cook
Average review score:

Two young women who are determined to have romance
The collaborative literary effort of Clare Cook and Bethany Patchin, I Will Follow is the engaging story of 16-year-old Meg Atwell and her sister, two young women who are determined to have romance in their lives. But an extended trip to Mexico places the girls in a remarkable and unfamiliar new world, and both of them must put their personal beliefs to the test in this deftly written, quite romantic, and impressively introspective novel.

A Wonderful Book by Amazing Women!
My friends, Bethany and Clare have hit a home run with the story of Meg and Diego...The manuscript was good, the finished product is awsome! Way to go to my friends!

A pure, powerful, potent piece of writing!
I Will Follow is a piercing look at a young girl's heart and inspires and encourages us to face the struggles of the heart head on. Romance is a gift from God but often abused. This book challenges us to look higher than instant gratification.
You won't be able to put it down!

Jeanne Jones' Healthy Cooking: For People Who Don't Have Time to Cook
Published in Paperback by Rodale Press (March, 1999)
Author: Jeanne Jones
Average review score:

More than you could ever want in a cookbook!
I never dreamt I'd see the day when I, of all non-cooking people, would say these words but wow, what a terrific cookbook Jeanne Jones' HEALTHY COOKING is! And you may be asking yourself "if she's a non-cooking person how would she know this is a great cookbook?" Well, I'll tell you. Because cooking is my father's absolute favorite hobby, I've been handed down many a cookbook from him with his hopes that maybe, just maybe, one of them might spark the hidden cook in me. But until HEALTHY COOKING I've never picked up a cookbook and looked at it more than once before placing it on the shelf to collect dust (let alone actually cook something out of it).

So anyway, back to why this book is wonderful. In addition to the obvious perks of the recipes being healthy and fast (the fast part making cooking relatively painless for those of us who don't wish to be in the kitchen any longer than absolutely necessary) the beginning of the book gives great advice on topics such as setting up your kitchen, purchasing poultry, storing food, and much more; the margins of the recipe pages are chock full of tips; but my absolute favorite is the "Spin Off" section at the bottom of each recipe which provides useful ideas for what to do with those pesky leftovers (invaluable information for those of us cooking for only one or two people). What more could you ask for in a cookbook? A sincere thank you to Jeanne Jones for creating such a tremendous cookbook as it's accomplished a feat none other, neither book nor human, could. You got a non-cook cooking!

My favorite cookbook!
This cookbook was the first one I ever bought...and it remains my favorite, even after getting married and amassing a very large cookbook collection. What I love about the book is that all of the recipes are very easy to prepare, yet taste as good as or better than most high-fat recipes. I am a registered nurse, so I am very careful to cook healthful food at home. There are recipes for everything from breakfast and brunch dishes to lunch dinner, dessert, and holiday menus. The Herbed Lemon Chicken is one of our favorite company dishes. This week I am making the following recipes from the cookbook: Tortilla Soup, Lemon-Tarragon Chicken on Cannellini beans, Shrimp Fettuccine, Beef Spaghetti Pie Ole, and Fat Free Fudge Brownies. A lot of the dishes can be prepared ahead of time, so it's a great book for entertaining or preparing holiday meals, as well. Enjoy!

This is one of the most useful cookbooks I own.....
....and I own a lot of cookbooks! Let's face it, who WANTS to cook healthy? When you put so much time, trouble, and expense into cooking what you hope are tasty meals, it's safe to assume that anything loaded with fat and calories will be a big hit. It's not such a sure bet when you're using low-fat this, and reduced-sodium that. But when my husband's doctor ordered him to switch to a low-cholesterol diet, I had to figure something out! I started looking through my many cookbooks, and came across this one by Jeanne Jones. I have to admit, I've had it for a while, and I never had used it much before now. But once I got to really looking at it, I thought, "Hey, these sound really good....like real food!" I went through the entire book and flagged all the recipes that sounded good to me...and when I was finished, there were a LOT of flags sticking out of the book! I made three of the recipes that first week, and my husband didn't even KNOW he was eating healthy! The Baked Quesadillas and Overnight Cheese Strata were every bit as tasty as any recipe using full-fat ingredients. The Tarragon Chicken and Pasta Bake drew rave reviews, and he even took the leftovers to work the next day to nuke for lunch. There's also a great recipe for Fettucine Alfredo, which as we all know, is "Heart Attack on a Plate" in it's original form. This one used fat-free cream cheese and skim milk. Who knew they could taste so good?

The only change I make to the recipes is to add a bit of salt. Since this is technically a "healthy" cookbook, not just low-fat, the author tends to skimp on salt. Since we don't need to do that, I go ahead a add just a bit, but if you are on a low-sodium diet, then the recipes would be just right for you. Next up on the menu....Chile Rellenos Casserole! Or will it be Ham & Cheese Calzone? Hmmmm.....

I cant throw it away till I find one in better condition
Ive had this book ever since I was a child and its missing the first 6 pages and the letters S-Z in the index. This is such a simple practicle guide to cooking and has so much basics in it. Wont they reprint it?

GOOD BASIC COOKING FOR EVERYONE
I made my very first confection (chocolate fudge) from this book at the age of ten. It has everything in it from desserts to Thanksgiving Dinner. My mother cherished this little book (with its simple to follow instructions) and used it very often, though, she owned other cookbooks (Betty Crocker, Better Homes and Gardens, etc). In the 1970s I bought my own copy and once again enjoyed all the wonderful recipes that Mom used to prepare. Both copies are long gone now and I've searched my local "used book stores" forever. I'm so happy to have found even a used copy at Amazon. I can't wait to receive it and prepare my Mom's favorite recipe for lamb shanks.

The Pocket Cook Book
My Mom gave this book to me as a pre-wedding gift in 1964. It has been my little cooking bible ever since. Unfortunately my dog got a hold of it many years ago and I am missing all pages through page 38. This book has recipes in it that I have used consistently for the past 37 years.

A wonderful Book
If you appreciate old fashioned values and true Americana, get this book. Truly unique and is capturing a part of our histroy that is being lost to development.

Award Winner for Book Design
This book has won a Southern Books Competition Award of Merit in Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the book's aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. It doesn't get much better!
This is an excellent book which covers its subject more thoroughly and beautifully than any book I have ever seen about this part of the country. It is extremely well written, and the photography is outstanding. Anyone who is interested in the preservation of our enviroment, especially our valuable waterways, should read this book.

Secret Energy: The Soul at Rest in Christ
Published in Audio Cassette by Sparkling Bay Books (February, 2001)
Authors: Bob Bew, Dayton Cook, and Rhett Ellis
Average review score:

Helped Me Very Much.
Secret Energy: The Soul at Rest in Christ helped me in more ways than I can list but the most important one has to be that it is helping me get to a place of greater consistency in my walk with Christ. Most Christians go through highs and lows, ups and downs, and Secret Energy is helping me break that cycle and stay strong in the Lord. The cycle of sin, guilt, and defeat paralyzes the walk of many Christians, and Secret Energy puts forth several key concepts on how to break that cycle.

It starts with understanding how God sees us at all times-- that is, he sees us in Christ-- Christ is, so to speak, the lense through which God views us. Our identity is taken up in Christ's identity.

This is a great series, and I am recommending to everyone who would like more victory in their walk with Christ.

Secret Energy: The Soul at Rest in Christ
This was an excellent cassette. I have had the pleasure of meeting Bob Bew in person; hearing him live or on cassette is truly a blessing. His understanding of scripture is truly phenominal and insightful.

If you are going to listen just one tape this year make it this one.

What a great series of tapes!!
Wow, what a great audio-book! "Secret Energy" is a teaching series. Bob Bew speaks of the meaning of the deeper Christian life. Before I heard these tapes, I was feeling empty inside-- I felt like my spiritual life was not going anywhere. I felt stagnant. The tapes introduced me to what it means to dwell where Christ dwells, to dwell in power, to dwell in victory. We don't have to live as defeated. We can be victorious in Jesus.

Great fun & great food
How refreshing to find a cookbook that is written by a real person with a sense of humor and and understanding of the importance of enjoying ALL your time - even that in the kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow. I love the options that are included in so many of them. At my last gathering, I even asked 2 close friends to come early & we used the recipes to prep for the party later... great time. My compliments to the author.

Simply Awesome!
This cookbook is one in a million! I enjoy all of the recipes because they are easy and different. I love your humorous approach! Best cookbook around!

PERFECT GIFT ITEM
You just have to buy this book for yourself and for gifts! I have given this book to several friends and relatives that love to collect different and unusual, yet functional, cookbooks and this one TAKES THE CAKE! I heard it has been entered into several contests! No doubt. Since I personally don't spend alot of time cooking, I really appreciate the quick recipes which are so funny and the text is extremely original. I love the graphics! If anyone likes unique cookbooks with a sense of humor, this is the one to buy! I was browsing through Cooking Light magazine when I ran across the ad and I bought several on a whim and have since ordered another 10 for perfect stocking stuffers! Thanks to the clever author for making my time in the kitchen so much more FUN! Any chance for a second ...Should the Cook be Laughing, Too?

Rob Cook never leaves a stone unturned!
As in his new book on Rogers Drums, Rob tells us everything there is to know about the Slingerland company, the founding family, the business, and most importantly, the drums. A labor of love!

If you are a not-so-modern drummer, this is an important guide to collecting Slingerland drums. Thanks, Mr. Cook! PM in TN.

Very Inclusive Treatment of a Little Known Drum Company
Wonderful pictures and historical study. Rob Cook knows his stuff!! A must for any drum collector, historian, and musician.

Stopping Hyperactivity: A New Solution
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (August, 1997)
Authors: Nancy O'Dell and Patricia Cook
Average review score:

This is a great book! Learn to eliminate hyperactivity
If you want to learn how to really treat hyperactivity, the core issues and causes of hyperactivity, then this is the book for you. So many books only address the symptoms, but Drs Cook and O'Dell go for the underlying causes. And the treatments don't involve drugs, either! Kudos for your brave foray into an overworked subject using innovative and workable treatments.

An easy-to-read, thorough and very helpful problem solver!
This is a great book, very thorough in its evaluation of potential behavioral troubles and methods of helping to solve them. Drs. Cook and O'Dell really seem to place the children being treated as first and foremost in considering ways to alleviate their discomfort as a result of the reflex.

Their drug-free approach is simple to learn and requires only regular, concentrated effort and time to reap substantial rewards. Children and families will benefit greatly from their years of research and straightforward talk.

Highly recommended book. I look forward to getting the video!

Remarkable book with a drug-free treatment of hyperactivity
In this book, I have found a clearly written explanation of Hyperactivity and its' underlying causes. The book doesn't pretend to be the "cure-of-the-day." Instead, it sets the reader upon a path of discovery. Discovery that can eventually stop the behavior of hyperactivity altogether by changing deep-rooted and detrimental habits. All of this in a concise, 200-page, manual of exercises, diagrams, pictures, and instructions. Quite a remarkable work, indeed.

Music: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introduction)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1998)
Author: Nicholas Cook
Average review score:

Thought-provoking
As a musician (and the book may cause you to rethink what that word actually means), this book revealed many ideas which had been festering in my subconscious without my ever really taking the time to think them through fully. This is not so much a history or introduction to music as it is a presentation of both recent thought in musicology and a framework in which to conceive and comprehend music as a human process in general and its relation to all of culture. Naturally the last several pages focus on particular "gender-related" issues because that is the recent thought in musicology, but the book does a good job of not presenting this recent view as definitive and of placing this view within a large historical context of thinking about music. The entire book is sharp, well-written, and articulate. It touches on the must fundamental questions of musical meaning in all its forms, yet it requires virtually no formal knowledge of music or an acquaintance with any particular body of music, classic, popular, or otherwise. Of course, the author assumes a general knowledge (you have heard of Beethoven, the Beatles, and so on...) and of course the more you know of music, the more you will take away from the book, but nothing in particular is assumed. The author does a good job of explaining the working myths most people have about music, without technical jargon. For instance, what does it really mean to say, "I just heard 'Beethoven's 9th?'"? Is Beethoven's 9th the sound waves I heard, (whether live or recorded), or is it the body of all past performances of the symphony, or is it the jumble of symbols and notation which Beethoven wrote down 200 years ago? Why does popular music often lack such a specific reference to "musical works" such as "Beethoven's 9th"? Why is popular music freer to deviate from notation, as opposed to classical music, which always insists on "adherence to the composer's original score"? Why is "authorship" and "authenticity" valued in both classical and popular music, although in different ways? Does music exist independently of humans and express eternal truths and beauties, or is music inextricably bound up with culture, commerce, society, and the world? How are the three commonly used categories of "composition, performance, and criticism" related, and are the boundaries between them really so clear? How do notation and symbolism affect the way music is constructed and experienced? How do we give meaning to music? Why is it that the "purest" of "pure music", is often surrounded by the most commentary, criticism, and words, those things whose very absense are said to give it its very "purity"? Why does music matter to us? Why do we care? If these questions sound interesting to you, you will like this book.

A very short review
This book is a little gem. All music students should read it.

An atypical introduction
This Very Short Introduction is notable as much for what it isn't as for what it is: it is not an introduction to any repertoire, Western classical or otherwise; it will not tell you about scales, chords, instruments, or sonata forms; it is not a buyer's guide or a "rough guide to..."; it is not a music appreciation textbook along the lines of (say) Copeland's "What to Listen for in Music." And this is a very good thing. Instead Cook presents a thought- and self-examination-provoking discussion of music as part of culture, daily life, and human experience. This extremely readable book is a valuable introduction to these issues that reach beyond the more familiar territories of the program note, album review, or newspaper diatribe about the corrupting influence of popular music.

Low-fat Gourmet cooking?
This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book.

Most Healthy and Helpful Cookbook Ever
This cookbook takes recipes ever one likes-- and makes it healthy-- I love this cookbook-- use it every day.. the baking , main meals and desserts are good-- the fat has been cut but still there is lots of favor in the food. You feel like you are doing something right for your family. Highly recommend for beginner cooks also--has lots of helpful hints..
